Definition of cookies
Cookies are small text files containing a certain amount of information exchanged between a website and the user’s terminal (usually the browser), where they are stored in order to be retransmitted to the same sites the next time the same user visits. They are mainly used for the purpose of making websites work and operate more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owners of the website itself. Cookies can be either session or persistent. Session cookies are stored in the terminal for a short period of time and are deleted as soon as the user closes the browser. Their use is strictly limited to the transmission of session identifiers (consisting of random numbers generated by the server) necessary to enable the safe and efficient exploration of the site. Persistent cookies, on the other hand, remain stored in the user’s terminal until a predetermined expiry date. These, since they are not directly deleted when the browser is closed, make it possible to remember the choices made by the user on the site, as well as to collect information about the pages of the site visited by the user, the frequency with which the site is visited and to identify the user’s navigation path, in order to improve the experience on this site. In the course of browsing a site, the user may receive “first party” cookies on his/her terminal, when they are managed directly by the owner and/or operator of the site, and also cookies that are sent from different sites or web servers (“third party” cookies); this happens because on the website visited there may be elements that reside on servers other than the one on which the website is located. In other words, they are those cookies that are set by a website other than the one you are currently visiting.
Cookies can be distinguished into three different types:
Technical cookies: used for the sole purpose of enabling the site to function properly;
Analytical cookies: used to collect aggregate information of a mainly statistical nature;
Profiling cookies: aimed at creating profiles relating to the user and used in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user when browsing the web.
Site cookies
The Controller receives and records information from your browser when you use the Site, which may also include personal data. We use cookies to collect this information, which may include among others: (i) your IP address; (ii) unique cookie identifier, cookie information and information about whether your device has software to access certain features; (iii) unique device identifier and device type; (iv) domain, browser type and language; (v) operating system and system settings; (vi) country and time zone; (vii) previously visited websites; (viii) information about your interaction with our Sites, such as clicks made, purchases and preferences indicated; and (ix) access times and referring URLs.
Third parties may also collect information from the Site via cookies. Third parties collect data directly from your web browser and the processing and treatment of this data is subject to their own privacy policies.
We use cookies to monitor our customers’ use of the Site and to understand their preferences (such as country and language choices). This enables us to provide services to our customers and improve their online experience. We also use cookies to obtain aggregate data about site traffic and site interaction, to identify trends, and to obtain statistics so that we can continually improve our Site. There are essentially three categories of cookies used on our Site:
Necessary/Functional: These cookies are necessary for the basic functionality of the Site and are therefore always enabled. These include cookies that allow us to remember you as you navigate the Site in a single session or, if required, from one session to the next. They help with security and regulatory compliance issues. The installation of such cookies does not require the prior consent of users of the Site.
Experience/Performance: These cookies help improve the functionality of our Site and enable interactions with external content, networks and platforms. In some cases, these cookies improve the speed at which requests are processed and allow us to store preferences for the selected site. Rejecting these cookies may lead to unspecific information and slower operation of the Site.
Measurement: these cookies allow traffic measurement and user behaviour analysis to improve the service.
For a complete and up-to-date overview of all third parties accessing your web browser, it is advisable to install a specially created web browser plug-in. You can also choose to have your computer send a warning each time a cookie is sent, or you can choose to disable all cookies. You can do this in the browser settings on each browser and device you use. Each browser is somewhat different, so you will need to consult your browser’s help menu for the correct way to change cookies. If you disable cookies, you may not have access to many features that make our Sites more efficient and some of our services will not function properly.
